Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition affecting women of reproductive age, often starting around the first menstrual cycle. PCOS impacts ovarian function and is typically identified by three key features:
- Irregular Periods: Menstrual cycles that are infrequent or prolonged.
- Excess Androgen Levels: Elevated levels of male hormones, which can lead to physical changes such as excess facial or body hair growth.
- Polycystic Ovaries: Ovaries with multiple small fluid-filled sacs that impair egg release.
Women exhibiting at least two of these traits are often diagnosed with PCOS. While the exact cause remains unclear, factors like insulin resistance, genetics and hormonal imbalances—such as increased anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) levels—are believed to contribute.
